WE ARE CASTING:

Kit Marlowe (Tenor, 23–30)The Historical Vibe: A brilliant, dangerous, atheist “bad boy.” The son of a shoemaker who became a spy and a rockstar playwright.
The Performance: High energy, very versatile. As a spy, should be able to cover a variety of musical styles. Think Freddie Mercury meets a philosophy professor. He needs a “bright” tenor voice.
William Shakespeare (Tenor, 23–30)The Historical Vibe: The “Upstart Crow.” In the early 1590s, he was the hungry newcomer trying to match Marlowe’s “mighty line.”
The Performance: A foil to Kit. More grounded, perhaps more observant, but equally ambitious. His tenor should be able to handle fast-paced, witty patter.
Thomas Walsingham (Baritone, 25–35)The Historical Vibe: Marlowe’s patron. A man of immense wealth and shadowy connections through his cousin, Francis Walsingham.
The Performance: Needs a smooth, authoritative Baritone. He is handsome, understated power and emotional complexity.
Robert Poley / Tom Watson (Baritone/Bass, 40+)The Historical Vibe: A professional deceiver. He was a double (or triple) agent who was present at Marlowe’s death. He survived the Tower of London multiple times and broke the Babington Plot. Watson is another famous poet of the time.
The Performance: The “Fixer.” Needs a gritty, resonant low end. He’s seen it all and done most of it. Gravitas is key here.
Frizer / Baines (Baritone/Bass, 35+)The Historical Vibe: Frizer was the man who ‘stabbed’ Marlowe; Baines was the man who snitched on him.
The Performance: Versatile “character” roles. They represent the murky underworld. Can be played with a bit of menace or dark comedic timing.
Ned Alleyn / Nicholas Skeres (Baritone, 21–30)The Historical Vibe: The greatest actor of the Elizabethan age. He was the original Tamburlaine and Faustus. 6ft+ (historically tall) and famously loud. Skeres is the third witness to Kit’s death.
The Performance: Pure charisma. Even in black clothes and Velcro, he should look like he owns the stage. Needs a powerful “Musical Theatre” Baritone that can fill a room without a mic.
Queen Elizabeth I (QEI) (Mezzo/Alto, Any Age)The Historical Vibe: The Virgin Queen at the height of her political survival. Controlled, terrifying, and brilliant.
The Performance: Does not need to be “old”—she needs to be commanding. A rich, steady Mezzo/Alto voice that cuts through the tenors. Think “The Boss.”
Audrey Walsingham (Soprano, 21–30)The Historical Vibe: Thomas’s wife (historically a Lady-in-Waiting). She was known to be politically savvy and influential in her own right.
The Performance: Needs a clear, soaring Soprano. In a room full of male spies and playwrights, her voice should provide a distinct, sharp, and intelligent musical texture.
